The inception of jewellery craftsmanship in Benin, dates back to the Edo Empire (1440–1897), a pre-colonial African state located in what is now known as the Southern region of Nigeria which was then part of the ancient Kingdom of Dahomey. Primarily crafted from cast bronze, carved ivory or ebony wood, these objects of regalia were exclusively produced for the royal court of the Oba of Benin - a divine ruler for whom the craftsmen created a range of ceremonially significant artefacts, that continue to yield great historical significance and style to this day.
